Wheelock's Latin accessory books.

I have decided to start teaching myself Latin and thanks to help from benissimus I decided to get Wheelock's Latin. I picked it up at my a local bookstore. Soon I will buy 38 Latin stories and I have been wondering about a few other book type things that are offered.

Wow, you really went all out! Don't forget to download the answer key, but don't look at it until after you are done with the exercises for the chapter. I trust you got the 6th edition of the textbook?

I wanted to know which of the above three accessories to Wheelocks were worth buying. I haven't bought any yet. It's my fault though because I didn't really ask which I should get.

Yep, I did get the 6th edition.

I would definitely not get the cards.. 20 bucks for punch-out flash crds??

Publishers are CRAZY!! And anyways you're right, the point of making vocab cards are for you to write the words and speed the memorisation process..

I'd wholeheartedly recommend the Dale Grote book, its been great to work with. Also, check out Dr. Grote's website ( http://www.languages.uncc.edu/classics/Wheelock/ ) youll find audio resources where he goes through each chapter's tutorial exercises in wheelock, lecture style. Its a tremendous help.

I don't own a copy of the workbook myself but I've seen it and frankly was not that impressed. In Canadian funds its more than the text itself! There are soooooooooooooo many online sites with exercises you could work with that I've personally decided against buying it.

I have also heard that people are having trouble obtaining the answer key for it from Harper's Publishing.

As for the flashcards, make you're own. Thats what I've done and its paid off exponentially!

The Dale Grote book is awesome but again I have just printed off the one online (which is for the 4th edition). Kudos for him though for having those audio files!

I'd be interested in hearing others opinions on the Wheelock's Latin Reader. Thanks!

The workbook doesn't impress me much either. The more practice the better, but there are less expensive ways to get more practice, and the textbook itself has a ton of exercises. Groton & May is a good reader for Wheelock's, I have never had a very good look at the Wheelock reader though.
