Reading Manuscripts

Post by kingbenlucas »

Hey,

I wonder if anyone has any wisdom about ways in which one might enter the world of reading manuscripts. I realise that there are resources available online at archive.org etc. I have two questions:
(1) Any suggestions as to where would be a good place to start?
(2) Any suggested paper resources? I have a dream of reading Greek manuscripts with my breakfast cereal!

hi, i would start with the old classic thompson:

https://archive.org/details/greeklatin00thomuoft

then hunt online for images of manuscripts that interest you after having read through that book.

cheers, chad

here are two relatively easy ones:

Codex Sinaiticus
http://codexsinaiticus.org/en/manuscrip ... omSlider=0
Codex Alexandrinus
http://www.textexcavation.com/codexalexandrinus.html

if you want to do papyri you can find some here:

http://ntvmr.uni-muenster.de/manuscript-workspace

accounts aren't required, I have one but didn't bother to log in. I just typed in p47 in the quick lookup box and pressed the button, then clicked on the manuscript # and brought up very clear images of P47. Some papyri are restricted but lots of them are not.

Try not to spill your coffee on the Venetus A.
