In LLPSI Cap XLI Orberg scribit:
Interim Turnus Rutulique, cum rebus suis diffiderent, ad Etruscos Mezentiumque, regem eorum, confugerant, qui Caere, opulento tum oppido, imperabat.
In the meantime Turnus and the Rutilians, having lost everything, fled to the Etruscans and their king Mezentium, who at that time was rule of Caere, then a wealthy city.

cum rebus suis diffiderent -- "since they did not have unconfident about their situation [rebus]"

I'm sure that's just a slip for "since they did not have confidence in their situation" or "since they were unconfident about their situation".Qimmik wrote:cum rebus suis diffiderent -- "since they did not have unconfident about their situation [rebus]"

Yes, a result of rewriting without rereading.

L&S give 'cause' as a translation of res. Would it be best translated as '....despairing of their cause' ?

That translation is fine. "Despairing" is maybe a little too strong -- the idea is that they lacked confidence. Rebus, of course, literally means their "things" or "matters"; "cause" seems like a good translation here.
