Carmentis divinum in modum fata

Post by pmda »

Euander, profugus ex Peloponneso, tum ea loca regebat, vir doctus, cuius mater Carmentis divinum in modum fata praedicebat.

Euander, fled from Peloponnesus, then ruled that region, a learned man,

a) whose mother Carmenta a prophetess foretold destiny.

b) whose mother Carmenta, in the manner of a prophet (divinum in modum), foretold destiny..

c) whose mother Carmenta, in the voice (fata) as (modum) a prophet foretold (the future).

?

Super in ipso capitulo Orberg dicit 'in modum' = nuper.

I can't for the life of me figure out what divinum is (accusative? - why?)

Paul

divinum in modum -- the preposition is between the adjective and the noun: "in a divine manner"

See Lewis and Short, modus II.B.2 for some similar expressions.

"whose mother Carmenta [should it be spelled this way, not -is?] foretold destinies in a divine manner"

Thanks. Divinum...is acc. Right? I would have expected abl.

Rectè rogas. Idioma est, scilicet "hunc in modum", dein obscurior est res. Aliter "divino modo" sine in praepositione, casu ablativo dici potest, nisi fallor.
It's a good question. It's idiomatic, so not immediately obvious. Otherwise you could say "divino modo" in the ablative without the "in", I would say. Vide A&G, §12c "hunc in modum".
I'm writing in Latin hoping for correction, and not because I'm confident in how I express myself. Latinè scribo ut ab omnibus corrigar, non quod confidenter me exprimam.
