...XL DE LLPSI

Post by pmda »

1. Pro re pauca loquar: Neque ego speravi hanc fugam celari posse,...
'pauca' is neuter acc. plural, right...? I would say a few [things} about this [re].

2. Iuppiter ad Aeneae: 'Desine querellis tuis et me et te incendere! Non mea sponte Italiam peto'

Desine ..? Stop, with your complaining, you are inflaming you and me (both) It is not for my sake that I seek Italy.

Yes, pauca is neut. acc. pl.; loquar is future - "I will say just a few words . . . "

2. Iuppiter ad Aeneae: No, this is what Aeneas says to Dido. "Stop inflaming both you and me with your complaints [abl.]." incendere is infinitive complement of desine (imperative).

non mea sponte - "not of my own will", i.e., I'm not heading for Italy because I want to myself."

Here's what Vergil wrote (Aen. 4.360-1):
desine meque tuis incendere teque querelis;
Italiam non sponte sequor.'
