"ἦλθεν αὐτῷ εἰς λόγους" Taylor 2.183

Post by daivid »

Can anyone suggest what "εἰς λόγους" means in the following:

τη δε υστεραια, ως εν απορια ην βασιλευς (ου γαρ αμεινον επρασσον οι περσαι) ἦλθεν αὐτῷ εἰς λόγους ἀνήρ τις ος ηγεμενος γενομενος τοις περσαις ατραπον εδειξε δια του ορους εν Θερμοπυλας φετοθσαν

This is from Greek to GSCE part2 page 183. I have gone back to this several times but I still don't really get it. My best stab is "On the next day, when the king was at a loss (for no better did the Persians fare) came to him to speak a certain man of the locality who, a becoming a guide to the Persians, showed a path through the hills leading into the 'Hot Gates'."
Or maybe it is "came to him word of a certain man"

Many thanks for any pointers.

LSJ list this phrase under ἔρχομαι in Post-Homeric phrases:
B.Post-Homeric phrases :
1. ἐς λόγους ἔρχεσθαί τινι come to speech with, Hdt.6.86.α᾽, S.OC1164 codd. ; so “ἐς ὄψιν τινὶ ἐλθεῖν” Hdt. 3.42.

It's an idiom. Coincidently, just this morning I happened to be reading from the new Hayes/Nimis edition of Lucian's On the Syrian Goddess, which affects a most Herodotian style.

22: ἐπινοέει ὦν τοιάδε, οἴνῳ ἑωυτὴν μεθύσσα ἐς λὀγους οἱ ἐλθεῖν.

"She resolved therefore these things, getting herself drunk with wine, to go to him for words."

The note (p. 41) reads "i.e. to speak with him."
