Bi-Directional English <--> Ancient Greek Dictionary?

Post by Gregorius »

Does anyone know of a decent Ancient Greek dictionary with a sizable English-to-Greek section? I'm just finishing up a self-taught course based on H&Q's text, but as with Latin, now that I've got a solid foundation in the language, my focus will be not on reading/translating ancient texts but on more creative uses. I've heard of a certain "lexicon" that's practically a standard, but it only goes from Greek-to-English. I need something more like Cassell's English <--> Latin Dictionary for Ancient Greek. I've managed to find the complete text of Woodhouse's dictionary online, but even this isn't quite what I'm looking for (doesn't list all principal parts of each verb, for one thing). Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I'm sorry, but want you want simply does not exist. There is an Oxford dictionary that I use when I need to go from English to Greek. It is the best thing out there for that, but it is basically a slightly sub-par pocket dictionary. And as for Greek to English, there are too many dialects of Ancient Greek to list principal parts. Go look at Liddell and Scott and you will often see a whole paragraph of forms.

Try
http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/definitionlookup

It is not good for the principle parts etc but once you have the Greek word
you can use it to check that sort of thing with Diogenes:

Best I can come up with:

http://www.lexilogos.com/english/greek_ ... ionary.htm

Both the engine on that site and links to other possibilities
