If the Romans didn't use them, when did the practice of using macrons as an aid for learners start?

I'm not sure when the use of macrons started, but since the Romans didn't use punctuation or spaces between words, either, I'm sure glad that we HAVE started "modernizing" classical texts by adding these little aids to learners!

Kilmeny

romans didn't like to be specific...which hurts me
i wish they had signs to distinguish meanings of the ablative sometimes when there are 2 possibilities!

I am so glad macrons be here!

would it have been medieval latin or something?? ???

I like the way the Romans spoke! I talk in all capitals with no "u" or "j" most of the time :P
