In Koine Greek, the ending ‐σαν was widely used. So could the 3rd person plural aorist II (or even imperfect) indicative active be distinguished from the 1st person singular : Chantraine, Morphologie historique du grec, mentions ὑπελαμβάνοσαν, ἀπήλθοσαν, εἴχοσαν, ἐδοκοῦσαν instead of ὑπελάμβανον, ἀπῆλθον, εἶχον, ἐδόκουν.
