Translation Help

Post by PeterD »

χαίρετε φιλέλληνες,

While reading and understanding a Greek sentence or passage is not too difficult, the metaphrasis from Greek to proper English can be Herculean. For example, the following short passage, which is about the creation of mankind by Prometheus, looks very easy, yet I'm still not 100% satisfied with my translation--needs an English major's touch.

διὰ δὲ τοῦτο πολλοὶ ἔτι εἰσίν οἳ τὰ μὲν σώματα ἀνθρώπων ἔχουσιν, τὰς δὲ ψυχὰς ζῴων.

My humble translation: " And on account of this, many still, who while they have the bodies of men, have the souls of animals."

Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

the only thing i'd note is that you could cut out lots of the non-content words...

and thus there are many still who have human bodies, but animal souls...

cheers, chad. :)
