Until now I've only been putting up texts on Scholiastae for which I already had notes in waiting. So, they've been very small. My next step is to upload a few of the major texts and do light markup to make them easy to add scholia to (i.e., divided into sections neatly, etc., etc.). Which works seem fundamental? Here's my current thinking —
Greek: Iliad, Odyssey - just because I'm a fanatic Homerist. It's my site, so nyah. For prose, Xenophon's bloody Anabasis should probably be high on the list. Maybe a few particularly famous speeches, but I'm not up on the orators.
Latin: Caesar's bloody Bellum Helveticum and probably the Aeneid. Nepos is also high on the list. Someone who loves Cicero more than me will have to decide which of his works are fundamental.
Any suggestions? Without enumerating the entire classical canon, that is?

For Cicero perhaps the well-worn In Catilinam series could be nice, especially the first. I like murder defenses, so Pro Milone and Pro Caelio are quite nice.

Somnium Scipionis was my second major encounter with Cicero. Is this still widely read?

Of the few texts that we read for my undergrad Cicero seminar, Somnium Scipionis was one of them. So, I'd say yes. Plus, it's inherently interesting if at times confusing in terms of cosmology.

Re: Required Texts for Scholiastae
Will, the idea was raised in the upcoming Ovid study group that we could add the text of Metamorphoses to your site, for the study group to make comments/annotations. What do you think of this idea?
“Cum ego verbo utar,” Humpty Dumpty dixit voce contempta, “indicat illud quod optem – nec plus nec minus.”
“Est tamen rogatio” dixit Alice, “an efficere verba tot res indicare possis.”
“Rogatio est, “Humpty Dumpty responsit, “quae fiat magister – id cunctum est.”

Is there a suitable online version that is unencumbered by copyright and is reasonably reliable we can grab as the base text?

Re: Required Texts for Scholiastae
No philosophers?
Anyway, from orators, I guess Demosthenes Philippics wouldn't be a bad choice.
From Lysias one of his best is "Against Eratoshenes"
For Panegyrics I'd go for Isocrates' "Panathenaicus" I guess.
There are many (obviously) but these are some of my favourites

Re: Required Texts for Scholiastae
In spite of your site being named "Aoidoi" you don't seem to be adverse to include narrative because you suggested "Xenophon's bloody Anabasis" yourself. Would you venture into Koine? If so, how about Epictetus?

Re: Required Texts for Scholiastae
There's a little Plato already there, and some more of the major dialogs should be uploaded. Unfortunately, the historians and the philosophers both tend to be wordy. I would eventually like some Aristotle.IreneY wrote:No philosophers?

Re: Required Texts for Scholiastae
Well, the point of Scholiastae is to be more than Aoidoi. Koine authors of all sorts would be welcome — I'm a fan of Epictetus myself.Bert wrote:In spite of your site being named "Aoidoi" you don't seem to be adverse to include narrative because you suggested "Xenophon's bloody Anabasis" yourself.
