The barbarians were no match for the Romans. It was only due to the internal decay and corruption that the Roman discipline (and funding) crumbled away and the relentless pressure that was the Germans finally cast the final blow. The barbarians were a threat all through Rome's lifetime, but it was when it became weak that it was overcome.
