For my 2nd post I'll describe how I'm going to decide if Homeric or Classical Attic would be best to start with. I've printed off a copy of the Greek words given in Owen & Goodspeed's book of the most common and important words in Homer. I studied a bit of Attic many moons ago using Smith & Melluish and can still recall some vocabulary (grammar's a bit shakier). I reckon if I go through the Homeric words and write in the English meanings for each word I know - or think I know - and then check them out, then from the proportion I get right I'll get an idea how well I might do with Homer, and take things from there.
