IPA Pronunciation/ Introduction

Postby WilliamThomson » Wed May 15, 2013 2:07 am

I would like to know if much headway has been made learning the IPA pronunciation and Classical Latin/Ancient Greek; that is, if anyone has done anything such as translating Greek and Latin words into their IPA equivalents?

Regardless, has anyone solid advice/resources for learning the IPA system? Thus far I've been distilling several sources, but many are cumbersome and seem not to be for beginners. If there are not any suggested resources but there is interest on behalf of the community, I can post what I can as I progress.

On another note: Hello.

There are two short books by Sydney Allen, one on Latin and one on Greek, that discuss the phonetics of ancient Latin and Greek in terms of the IPA. They're published by the Cambridge University Press.

Follow this series but you really need to spend time with it [the IPA] to become comfortable and Qimmik's suggestions are good, solid, important ones:
