Am I the only one who detects an increase in faux textkit members? I am talking about lovers of the classics whose profiles include websites that seem to reference mortgages, low-cost loans, medicines, Russian Lolitas, and other such products.

Why, just today, I checked into the Koine group to see what 'whither' had posted to a 9 month old discussion about Revelation. Seems he had something to say about prescription medications. Frankly, it seemed a bit off-topic.

Founder Jeff, is you listening? Please purge your textkit of these rascals. Let them cavort in their own dank whackdom, but not in these Elysian fields.

Cordially,

Paul

Dear Paul,

You are not the only one who has wondered about this! It is a sorry state of affairs and I deplore it! I don't know why these people think they'll sell more products invading this space of ours. I do not, however, think this to be a personal assault on lovers of the classics. But some people out there apparently do not have any restraint whatsoever. I hope something can be done about it!

Best,
David

Let's not be too critical, peeps. From this very same website I get offers every day to "Meet Young Greek Singles", which to me almost qualifies as pimping.

(Just teasing, Jeff. )

We bring these accounts to Jeff's attention on a regular basis for him to delete. A lot of them don't seem to post, I guess they are content to just have an ad in their profile. Unfortunately, there is no real way to stop new ones from coming :x

Excuse my ignorance but who are 'they'? I mean, are they humans or computers? :?

In all fairness, you don't have to be a "poster" to get benefits from Textkit.
I am not talking about the spammers but about those members who never post on the forum but maybe read all the messages and download a book or two.
(Having said that, there must be a lot of members who never do anything with it.)

Probably both. The jumbly-named fake "members" with porn ads in their profiles are probably automatic.

The recent stream of spam posts is either the work of a spammer-programmer quite familiar with phpBB or of actual humans paid to randomly dump marketing filth in existing threads.

Maybe they're on to something

Post by CanadianGirl »

To Bardo & Bert: Possibly you two are missing the point. What those guys mean is- FIRST you meet a "Young Greek Single," THEN you learn Greek in a day. Maybe they're on to something! Regards, Paige. (CanadianGirl).

Oh, I know that. I am talking about people who have some dirty link in their profile and never post. They effectively have an ad on the front forum page for whatever time that it shows them as the newest member. I'd certainly distinguish this from those who register out of interest but do not post. I didn't mean to say that we report accounts that do not post!

I see what you mean. I notice the odd spam post but I have not seen dirty links in profiles. (Not because they are not there but because I don't check out profiles.)
I quess some policing is required to keep this down.
I wonder if people were asked to update there subscription an a regular basis, if a lot of members who have forgotten that they are members would be 'weeded' out. This would make policing the spam members easier as well.

This forum actually prevents anyone with less than 10 posts from having a link in their profile (and even then the feature must be manually activated by Jeff). Probably not all automated profile-generating spam bots realize this fact, but at least we can feel satisfied that nobody is getting any benefit from those profiles here on textkit. Now, the random offtopic posts with the links to the online pharmacy (or whatever), I think only our diligent moderators can stop those.

Hi,

Are you sure about this? How is that our newest 'member' (interpret as you will), 'dulorun' has a link in his profile to a porn gateway despite the fact that he has zero posts?

Cordially,

Paul

I am pretty sure this was put into effect some months ago. I can't remember the exact numbers, but if a member goes 6 months or so without posting the account is deleted. This doesn't really help with spammers obviously, it just makes it easier to ascertain how many active members we have.

I read all new posts in "Learning Greek", "Homeric", "Open Board" and "Philosophy", and I'm yet to find one of the posts you are referring to.

"...I checked into the Koine group to see what 'whither' had posted ..." (Paul)

Why do the Koiners get all the goodies? We Homerics could certainly use some action!

"What those guys mean is- FIRST you meet a "Young Greek Single," THEN you learn Greek in a day." (CanadianGirl)

Good point, Paige. We should just pool our money and find a hag with a good voice for a bargain. When we're all done learning Greek, whiteoctave gets to keep her!

Hmmm, as I look at the newest profiles I see that the evidence supports you on this one. But, when I go in to edit my own profile there is a note that says "To have your website listed, you must be registered for at least 30 days and have contributed 10 meaningful posts to the forum. PM the Forum Admin to request a URL listing." So, I am at a loss, but it does appear that these "members" have found a loop-hole of some sort.

Hmm, more and more people keep writing funny stuff with whiteoctave on them. Is this just to please our Obispo, or something in whiteoctave makes him deserve that? :)

Or maybe Jeff has just implemented that?

It is because he has disappeared! Bardo is merely mentioning him in an effort to convince himself that whiteoctave still exist.

It is also suspicious for whiteoctave and cweb255 (yes CY VEB TVå FEM FEM)
to have run away simultaneously. It leads to all sorts of theories.

So, every one, follow me the Pied Pishop tibicen, join the congo, and put whiteoctave in your signatures! Please the bishop! Episcopo placeatur!
