Sancta nox, placida nox

Postby mingshey » Tue Dec 23, 2003 8:30 am

Though I'm not a christian, I like those lovely carrols. And here's one I like best to sing in German. And it's a latin version so as to fit in textkit forum. :)

1. Sancta nox, placida nox!
Nusquam est ulla vox;
Par sanctissimum vigilat,
Crispo crine quieti se dat
Puer dulcissimus.

2. Sancta nox, placida nox!
Certior fit pastor mox
Angelorum alleluia;
Sonat voce clarissima
Iesus salvator adest.

3. Sancta nox, placida nox!
Nate Dei, suavis vox
Manat ex ore sanctissimo,
Cum is nobis auxilio,
Christe, natalibus.

Sounds a bit brutal in Latin, doesn't it? :wink:
I've got a book somewhere with some Christmas carols, some are in Latin, too.
I remember my music lessons in the fifth and sixth class... most songs were in Latin, somehow I think it's fun to sing in Latin :wink: .

You were so lucky! I would have loved to sing in Latin!

All is calm = Nowhere is there any voice. Interesting!

Wow! That's so neat! I should sing that for my grandparents while they're here. They're both Catholic, so I imagine they would enjoy it.

It does sound a bit strange when you sing it in Latin, doesn't it? But the German is just as bad, and yet I'm still trying to find all the words to the German version. (I only know the first couple of lines in German.)

"Silent Night" sounds lovely in Gaelic.

Here's the German text:

1. Stille Nacht! Heil'ge Nacht!
Alles schläft, Einsam wacht
Nur das traute heilige Paar.
Holder Knab' im lockigten Haar;
Schlafe in himmlischer Ruh!
Schlafe in himmlischer Ruh!

2. Stille Nacht! Heil'ge Nacht!
Gottes Sohn, O! wie lacht
Lieb' aus Deinem göttlichen Mund,
Da schlägt uns die rettende Stund;
Jesus! in deiner Geburth!
Jesus! in deiner Geburth!

3. Stille Nacht! Heil'ge Nacht!
Die der Welt Heil gebracht,
Aus des Himmels goldenen Höh'n
Uns der Gnaden Fülle läßt seh'n:
Jesum in Menschengestalt!
Jesum in Menschengestalt!

4. Stille Nacht! Heil'ge Nacht!
Wo sich heut alle Macht
Väterlicher Liebe ergoß
Und als Bruder Huldvoll umschloß
Jesus die Völker der Welt!
Jesus die Völker der Welt!

5. Stille Nacht! Heil'ge Nacht!
Lange schon uns bedacht,
Als der Herr vom Grimme befreyt,
In der Väter urgrauer Zeit
Aller Welt Schonung verhieß!
Aller Welt Schonung verhieß!

6. Stille Nacht! Heil'ge Nacht!
Hirten erst kundgemacht
Durch der Engel "Hallelujah!",
Tönt es laut bey Ferne und Nah:
"Jesus der Retter ist da!"
"Jesus der Retter ist da!"
