I'm sure you've heard this one:
There was a scholar who spent his whole life trying to prove that the Iliad was not composed by Homer, but by another Greek with the same name.
My main reason for believing that Iliad has a single principle author is literary: it has a great structure, and you don't get that from a committee, at one time or spread over time.
