Anki Deck (Request) Thread

Post by ablablabla »

Salvete omnes.

It seems far more people have made Anki decks than there are available at the official shared deck page for Latin here: https://ankiweb.net/shared/decks/latin

It's possible I'm not searching efficiently enough to find all those that are publicly available, but it seems as if many people don't share their private decks. Can someone explain why? In the past week or so I've come across many mentions of people who've made amazing-sounding decks. One person I think mentioned that they'd put every Latin sentence of Wheelock's into Anki flashcards. That sounds pretty great to me, and I'd love to have a poke around a more comprehensive set of decks than I can find at the moment. So post them here if you're interested in sharing!

It might seem a bit rich to be making this thread without posting a deck of my own that I've made, but I only started two weeks ago today, and have been powering through Wheelock's (now on Caput XXII) much helped by the vocabulary deck that some kind soul made available here https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/2053900866

Anyway, I don't know if such a request/thread has been made before, apologies if so, but what I'd specifically love to get going on without having to needlessly duplicate someone else's painstaking labour is a big list of principal parts for all, or at least the most common few hundred verbs (if possible with accompanying English definitions). I can't believe no one has ever produced such a thing before, so I'm launching this thread in the hope people link to their private decks here.

Valete!

Well as it happens a minimum of painstaking labour on my part (following the link I already posted) actually turned up this useful set of decks, which I've now downloaded:

Principal parts of verbs (200 cards) https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1752151944
Lingua Latina Familia Romana 1-18 (if anyone spots more from the later books/chapters, or a deck that has full sentences post it here) https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/3300683758
Regular verb conjugations https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/3185927584
Irregular verb conjugations https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/3756779099

Any other especially good decks you know of (especially if they incorporate sentences or longer phrases), please post them!

Also interested to hear how people use Anki, and whether you prefer it to Memorize (I like its minimalism more than the gamified bells and whistles). I've got a pretty dispiriting review load every day now though, with somewhere between 80 and 120 reviews for the last few and the next couple of days for sure, and it's putting my initial zeal for Wheelock's through the meat grinder a little. How long do you manage to spend at it per day?

I'm near the end of the book, (currently at XXXVI), and I'd been using Anki purely for vocab. where I deduce the Lat entry from the End gloss. This helps me primarily in two ways:

1. It helps me think about how I would want to express something in Latin, which seems to me to be deficient in WL's exercises that focus on translating Lat->Eng.
2. It drills me in vowel lengths of Latin words, and especially vowel lengths of principal parts of verbs. (e.g. cōnferō, cōnferre, but contulī, collātum).

The downside of this is that I don't get enough exposure to secondary meanings of Latin words that need to be known to translate certain Lat->Eng in context, and have to look up the appendix now and then.

The fields in my deck are as such: <entry no.>, <unit>, <dictionary forms>, <part of speech>, <gloss>. When a form, e.g. quandō, can be used as multiple parts of speech, I have a separate entry for all of them. When a preposition/conjunction has different meanings when accompanied with different clauses, (e.g. indic., subjunct. of purpose, subjunct. of command, abl. acc.), I separate them into different entries as well.

Where several forms correspond to an identical English gloss, e.g. nimis, nimium; I hint at the form in the gloss.

However, I do not have separate entries when a verb takes on a different sense when used transitively or when accompanied with a dative object, seeing as many verbs often take on different metaphorical senses regardless of whether these senses are accompanied with a change to transitive.

I don't drill regularly, but I find that I do well enough to my satisfaction, and my main hiccups are with adverbials like sīc and tam with similar functions and with vowel lengths.

Do you know Quizlet (https://quizlet.com)? With Quizlet it is much easier to create a deck. You can merely copy and paste a very long list of latin words with their definitions (like this one for instance: http://dcc.dickinson.edu/pt/latin-vocabulary-list Once the deck is ready, you can download it with Anki App.

I used it to create several lists of greek words (ranking from 1-100 in frequency, 100-200, 200-300, and so forth).

I have been similarly dissatisfied with the lack of a single, good Anki deck to memorize *everything* in Wheelock's (7th Edition). I'm on chapter XXXII now, creating my own deck which I find to be far superior to the other decks I've been able to find, Anki or otherwise. I do not intend to publish it on Ankiweb until I have completed all forty chapters and done some final QA, but at this point the end is in sight, and I'm publishing my initial imports on GitHub as I go in the meantime. Please see this link for more information (scroll down a bit for the readme), including the feature list: this is not just vocabulary; it is vocabulary WITH macrons and accents AND grammar of every sort; I'm trying hard to translate every detail the book conveys into flashcards, with a strong emphasis on building reading comprehension skill. The deck is at around three thousand cards at present. If you take a look and find the material useful, please star the repository. Thanks!

Thanks very much for all your effort!! I'm sure your deck will be extremely useful for me when I start learning Latin.
