Conditionals, specific sentence help needed

Post by Matermultorum »

The key translates with a not, but there isn’t a non in the sentence. I wasn’t sure if it was negative because of the imperfect subjunctive somehow?

Si transire conarentur, Caesar eos prohibere posset.

The key says

If they were attempting to cross, Caesar would not be able to block them.

Thank you,

Must be a mistake in the book. Well caught! Put a "non" in front of posset (or delete the "not" from the key) and all's well.

I expect transpire is just a typo on your part. If not, you should throw the book away!

You know there was a 1631 reprint of the King James version of the bible that gave one of the Ten Commandments as "Thou shalt commit adultery"? True story.

Thank you for the confirmation and the story about the KJV. LOL! I had not heard that before.
Yes, transpire was my typo. I'll correct it.
