Putasne eam rem dis superis curae esse?

Post by pmda »

In Orberg's LLPSI Cap XL Dido ad Aeneam: Putasne eam rem dis superis curae esse?

You think this thing to be of concern to the high Gods.

....with dis in the dative ??

dis = deis

Esse curae means "to be as a care to", "to be of concern to."

Allen & Greenough 382.1 calls this "dative of purpose or end." This is a "double dative" construction. The person(s) for whom the subject of esse is a concern concern or care are also in the dative.
