Conjugating 3rd -io

Postby sisyphus » Wed Apr 20, 2005 9:32 pm

Salvete,

i've started using the Verbix conjugator (http://www.verbix.com/languages/latin.shtml), and jolly useful it is too. i just happened to notice in passing recently that it conjugates the 2nd per. sing. pres. active ind. as -îs (that's a long 'i', if you can't see it). Try http://www.verbix.com/webverbix/go.asp?T1=facio&D1=9&H1=109&sourceid=Mozilla-search or http://www.verbix.com/webverbix/go.asp?T1=cacio&D1=9&H1=109&sourceid=Mozilla-search to see what i mean.

This is not what i see in such as D'Ooge or A&H. Is there some justification for it? Perhaps it's from some other epoch, early or late Latin, or variant such as Vulgar rather than Classic.

It's not a burning issue, just curious.

It is definitely an error, only the fourth conjugation has endings containing a long i. This website seems to have a problem with all of its 3rd conjugation -io verbs in the 2nd person singular and most of them in the 2nd person plural as well. Quite unfortunate since it appears that these are some of the most commonly looked up words.

Thankyou. i've mailed Verbix. If i get any response i'll post it here.

BTW, one of my posted links was in error. "cacio" is a word i made up (surprise :o ) whilst idly trying to ascertain if Verbix is DB or algorithmically driven. i meant to post a different, real 3rd -io.

Cheers.
