Teaching Latin to 6 graders

Postby Caesar » Thu Mar 17, 2005 3:34 pm

Next year I am going to start teaching latin to six graders. It would be really helpful if any body knew the six grade syllabus for latin and any good resources available to teach it. Thanks a lot

Ave, Caesar. (Aren't you dead?:S)

what about basing your course on a Latin study book, such as "Lingua Latina"?

Or you could try to locate material on AP Central for educating your love once:
http://apcentral.collegeboard.com/

http://www.txclassics.org/teachingap.htm gives you tips on teaching AP Latin.

Hope that helps!
Vale!

PS. Quiz-based vocabulary training is a key word.

Not to be mean, but shouldn't the textbook or goals of your curriculum dictate the syllabus? Do you know what text you're using? Do you know what the goals of your curriculum are? Shouldn't you be talking to your department head or colleague? If there is no syllabus for teaching the 6th grade curriculum, shouldn't you be starting with yourself in developing the curriculum? There is no way that you're going to find a quick-and-easy syllabus online, and regardless, shoudn't you be developing the curriculum around the abilities and expectations of your 6th graders?

I've taught 6th graders Latin, and if you're not prepared, it will be a long, long year.
