Quick Help

Post by Pandabean »

Hi I was wondering if anyone could help me here?

I am looking for some latin phrase to go on my sword.

I was thinking of using my clan's motto: "Per Mare, Per Terras", but slightly changing it to "Per Mare, Per Terras, Per Astra".

Now my question is does that say, "By Sea, By Land, By Stars" Or would it be better with "the" in "By (the) Stars"?

Or does this sound any better: "By Honour, By Truth, By Glory, This Is The Way To The Stars?" How would that be in Latin

If anyone can come up with any other suggestions, I will be most weclome to consider it.

Thank You
Andy McDonald

Latin does not have an equivalent of 'the' it has case endings instead. If you put in a the in English it changes the meaning of the sentence somewhat too, as by does not mean next to or near.
Per Mare, Per Terra means through the sea and over the land (was the 's' on the end of terra a typo? Per is with ablative and terras would be accusative).

Emma, are you sleepy?
Per is with the accusative: per mare, per terras is correct.
It's also correct to add 'per astra'.
By Honour, By Truth, By Glory, This Is The Way To The Stars?
There are different ways to translate this.

I would put it this way: Per honorem, per veritatem et per gloriam via ad astra fert.
Litterally this means: the way to the stars goes by honor, by truth and by glory.

This may be to long for on a sword?

Thank You Both.

I may take out glory, that will shorten it a bit, but I guess I will have to wait and see.

Perhaps Emma confuses "per" with "super"? The last one may take either +acc., in which case it means "above, etc", or +abl., in which case it means "concerning, about" (basically equivalent to "de").
