Translating inscription in St. Stephen Walbrook, London

Post by pmda »

I have translated the following inscription to be found in St. Stephen Walbrook church in London:
Hanc aedem miramini ingenio Christopher Wren constructam munificentia multorum refectam - as follows:

Marvel at this building which by the genius of Christopher Wren was built and restored with the support of many.

Not very idiomatic..but does it sound OK.

Salve...

Aedes here means church (or temple Classically). I'd prefer:

Marvel at this church, constructed by the genius Christopher Wren, restored with the support of many.

But your translation is very good as is...

Vale,
Chris
