Agreement / nouns and adjectives

Post by pmda »

I'm not sure about something.

In answer to a question in Orberg's LLPSI : Unde venit lux lunae?

I have given the answer: Luna luce sole illustratur - i.e. the moon is lit by sunlight.

Is my use of 'sole' - ablative of sol, -is correct? Or should I have written Luna luce solis illustrator - or would either be OK?

I'm pretty sure it needs to be sōlis: "by/with the light of the sun". I can't imagine why "lūce sōle" would make sense, because neither "lūx" nor "sōl" is an adjective, so there's no apparent way that one could be modifying the other.

You could possibly say "Lūna sōle illustrātur", though, in which case you see the sun as an instrument by which the moon is lighted.

It can mean "by the light from the sun", furrykef.
Ità potest significari: "per lucem [a] sole"
I'm writing in Latin hoping for correction, and not because I'm confident in how I express myself. Latinè scribo ut ab omnibus corrigar, non quod confidenter me exprimam.
