Five days after the triumphal entry of Christ into Jerusalem, Simonides tells Ben-hur news of a sudden turn in events.
The Christ has not fulfilled our hopes. We and many thousands of our Jewish brethren have hailed him as our king, but … he does nothing.
Perhaps he is waiting for a sign.
Forsitan expectat signum quoddam.
When the people offered him the throne he refused it. Daily he has been in the temple preaching that men must be merciful and seek not vengeance on their enemies.
And now, since many people no longer acclaim him the priests and politicians grow bolder in their threats against him. I fear his life is now in danger.
As Ben-Hur fears for all his hopes and ambitions, Iras, the Egyption girl is quick to show her true character and assails him with bitter mockery.
Dum Benhur timet omnibus quæ vel sperat vel cupit, Iras, puella Ægyptia, aspero irrisu appetens eum, properat veram indolem declarare.
Fool! Can you not see that no one as humble and meek as he is can ever be a king? You will gain nothing by following him!
I can be a better judge of that than you, Iras. Why are you not guided by your father’s faith?
Melior te existimator sum, o Iras. Cur fide patris non uteris?
Κρείσσων σου κριτής εἰμι, ὦ Ἰράς. Διὰ τί τῇ πίστει τοῦ πατρὸς οὐ χρῇ;
Realizing now that Iras has all along planned to use him only for her own advancement, Ben-Hur’s last vestige of affection is swallowed in the dark shadow of his righteous anger.
Keep your king of the Jews, stupid one! Power and fame shall never fall within your grasp.
Fruere tuo rege Judæorum, stolide! Potestatem autem et gloriam numquam comprehendes.
Even though his enemies revile him and his friends desert him, I shall follow in his steps. Get out of my sight, you vain and selfish creature!
Etsi inimici ejus maledicunt eo, amici autem ejus derelinquunt eum, equidem ego una sequar eum. Vade retro me, tu vana et te ipsam amans!
