help needed for ancient greek computer game

Post by daivid »

I am writing an Ancient Greek version of computer game I played 40 years ago - in those input and output was text which is what I want as the point is to practice Greek.

The player is in the role of despot who assigns the peasants to various tasks. If the orders work out well the peasants continue to obey if not they rebel.

I am working on the first page in which the player assigns tasks.
First off there is a table of what everyone is doing now:

For totals I have imitated Diod. 19.40. Allowing for the fact that it needs to be abbreviated does this look right:

The player then types in a command to assign a group of peasants to something different I thought of using 3rd person imperatives :

That is intended to mean:
Let be weaving of the women farming 141.
that is
take out of the number of women who are currently working in the fields and assign them to weaving clothes.
Again bear in mind it has to be brief as the player has to type it in every time.

I put this game aside for a while but returned to it a few days ago. The back end just needs minor tweaking so now I'm doing the input output bit which will of course be in Greek. I'm especially keen to know if ὑφανάτωσαν γυναικὼν γεωργουσῶν μία τεσσαράκοντα ἑκατόν is along the right lines. I now intend to have a player select each word from a list of options rather than have the player type in every letter.

The back end is complete so I am now working on the Ancient Greek feed back.

Internally the computer uses a clothing level to calculate the risk of peasants catch their deaths from the cold but this will be output as follows. Each step signifies the peasants are better clothed.

1) "ὁ Λαός ἔστι᾽ γυμνός.";
2) "ὁ Λαός ῥάκι᾽ ἔχει";
3) "ὁ Λαός περιβεβλημένους σάκκους ἔχει.";
4 )"ὁ λαὸς μόνον χιτῶνας ἔχει.";
5) "ὁ λαὸς καὶ χιτῶνας καὶ χλαμύδας ἔχει.";
6) "ὁ λαὸς νῦν καὶ πορφύρας ἔχει.";

And here is the statement that currently is posted if the player loses:

I have done the output for two things

First the size of the embankment that protects the village from the river which tends to flood.

This is the output for the popularity (or not) of the players rule:

All corrections will be greatly appreciated

I want to make one or two improvements to look of the pages but the game is essentially done and can be found here:
http://kart-hadasht.co.uk/anc/greeklang/riverdespot/

I say done but of course there will be a great many errors so help would be much appreciated.

For now here are the flood descriptions (starting with no flood, rising to the most serious):

If the player makes an error in input there are a number of error messages.

μόνον μεταστῆθι ἐστὶ ὀρθόν = Only μεταστῆθι is correct. (ie not whatever verb the player actually entered.)
= It is required that the number be masculine.
= It is required that the number be feminine
= Weaving is a concern to women (ie not to men)
=Building is a concern to men (ie not to women)
Only men can be assigned to building the flood protection wall and women to the task of weaving
ἀριθμὸς οὐ ἐστὶν ὀρθότης = you made a mistake. number is not correct.
(eg entering 15 and 20 rather than 35)

Thanks in advance for any mistakes spotted.

Thanks very much for the corrections and I have myself spotted one - it should be τὸ ὑφαίνειν γυναιξὶ μέλει.

There is an option for the player to tell the women to burn the cloth. I did contemplate having that cause the destruction of the stock of clothing but that seamed mean so instead it throws up the error:
