Ben-Hur hastened to bring his mother and sister to Simonides and Esther who gave them all the comforts so long denied them.

Benhur festinans adduxit matrem sororemque ad Simonidam atque Esther, qui eas omnibus rebus diu destitutas allevarent.

Ὁ Βενὼρ σπεύσας ἤγαγε τὴν μητέρα τε καὶ τὴν ἀδελφὴν πρὸς Σιμωνίδην τε καὶ Ἐσθήρ, οἵτινές γε αὐτὰς ἁπάντων πολὺν χρόνον ἀπορούσας ἐκούφισαν.

But Ben-Hur is disturbed by ugly rumors which are heard throughout the city.

Benhur autem turpibus rumoribus qui per civitatem audiuntur commovetur.

Ὁ δὲ Βενὼρ αἰσχραῖς ἀκοαῖς διὰ τῆς πόλεως ἀκουομέναις ταράσσεται.

I am puzzled, mother. The people say that Jesus is but the son of a humble carpenter, but I am convinced he is destined to be king of all Israel.

Dubito, mater. Homines enim dicunt Jesum modo filium humilis fabri esse, ego autem persuadeo mihi illum ad regnandum in toto Israël natum esse.

Ἀπορῶ, μῆτερ. Οἱ μὲν γὰρ ἄνθρωποι λέγουσι τὸν Ἰησοῦν μόνον τὸν υἱὸν ταπεινοῦ τέκτονός τινος εἶναι, ἔγωγε δὲ πέπεισμαι ὅτι ἐκεῖνος τοῦ βασιλεύειν ἐν παντὶ τῷ Ἰσραὴλ ἐγεγόνει.

You must believe, my son, what you have seen with your own eyes. He is much more than a king. He is our promised redeemer and his power is from God himself.

Οpus est tibi, fili, credere quibus vidisti cum oculis tuis. Ille enim est multo plus quam rex. Est autem promissus redemptor noster et postestas ejus ab ipso Deo.

Χρῆ σε, τέκνον, πιστεύειν οἷς γε ἑώρακας τοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς σου. Ἐκεῖνος γάρ ἐστι πολὺ πλεῖον βασιλέως. Ἔστι δ' ὁ ἐπηγγελμένος λυτρωτὴς ἡμῶν καὶ ἡ δύναμις αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ αὐτοῦ τοῦ Θεοῦ.

What are you going to do now my son? Is this time of war? Why do you carry a sword?

Quid facies, fili? Estne tempus belli? Cur gladium habes?

Τί ποιήσεις, τέκνον; Ἆρά ἐστι καιρὸς πολέμου; Διὰ τί ξίφος ἔχεις;

I have sworn to defend him with my life and now he needs me. I like not the reports I have heard about the city concerning plots against him!

Ego juravi me periclitaturum capite ut defendam eum, ille autem nunc indiget me. Ægre vero fero quæ in urbe audivi de consiliis adversum eum.

Ἐγὼ μὲν ὤμοσα κινδυνεύσειν ἐν ψυχῇ ἀμύνων αὐτῷ, ἐκεῖνος δὲ νῦν χρῄζει μου. Χαλεπῶς δὴ φέρω ἃ ἐν τῇ πόλει ἤκουσα περὶ ἐπιβουλῶν πρὸς αὐτόν.

Ben-Hur! All his enemies are not Romans. Even now, the so-called leaders of our own Jewish people are said to conspire against him.

Benhur, omnes inimici ejus non sunt Romani. Etiam nunc principes, qui appellantur, Juda populi nostri dicuntur consilium capere adversum eum.

Βενώρ, πάντες οἱ ἐχθροὶ αὐτοῦ οὔκ εἰσι Ῥωμαῖοι. Ἔτι καὶ νῦν οἱ ἄρχοντες ὀνομαζόμενοι Ἰούδα τοῦ λαοῦ ἡμῶν λέγονται ἐπιβουλὴν ἐπιβουλεύειν αὐτῷ.

He has aroused the fears of the politicians who are afraid he will offend the Romans and the high priests are jealous of his power over the common people.

Ιlle formidinem injecit senioribus timentibus ne displiceat Romanis, principes autem sacerdotum æmulantur potestati illius in populum terræ.

Ἐκεῖνος μὲν φόβον ἐνέβαλε τοὶς πρεσβυτέροις φοβουμένοις μὴ ἀπαρέσκῃ τοῖς Ῥωμαίοις, οἱ δὲ ἀρχιερεῖς ζηλοῦσι τὴν δύναμιν αὐτοῦ εἰς τὸν λαὸν τῆς γῆς.

It seems strange to me, dear Ben-Hur, that you can think that Jesus seeks revenge and worldly power. Does he not teach love and mercy and tell us that we must forgive our enemies?

Mirum mihi videtur, ο amice Benhur, quod putas Jesum vindictam et humanam potestatem quærere. Nonne docet misericordiam et caritatem, jubens nos dimittere inimicis?

Θαυμάσιον δοκεῖ ἔμοιγε, ὦ φίλε Βενώρ, ὅτι νομίζεις τὸν Ἰησοῦν τὴν τιμωρίαν καὶ τὴν ἀνθρωπίνην δύναμιν ζητεῖν. Οὐχὶ διδάσκει τὸ ἔλεoς καὶ τὴν ἀγάπην, κελεύων ἡμᾶς ἀφιέναι τοῖς ἐχθροῖς;

Ah, you, sweet Esther, who are so gentle and kind yourself, already love our king because he teaches that which you do most esteem.

Ha tu, dulcis Esther, ipsa tam mitis es, ut jam ames regem nostrum quia docet beneplacita tibi.

Ἃ σύ, ὦ γλυκεῖα Ἐσθήρ, αὐτὴ οὕτω πραεῖα εἶ, ὡστε ἤδη φιλεῖν τὸν βασιλέα ἡμῶν ὅτι διδάσκει τὰ εὐδόκιμά σοι.

Thanks! I agree with the first and will correct it. Ben-Hur and Esther are not related. Actually (spoiler!) Ben-Hur marries Esther. σεαυτή is not attested, as far as I know.
