A wild looking, but striking figure draws the gaze of all eyes.

Oculi omnium in hominem vastum vultu at mirabilem finguntur.

He must be the man they call John the baptist. He is pointing at someone. Hear what he says.

I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness. Make ready the way of the Lord. Make straight his path.

Ego vox clamantis in deserto: parate viam Domini; rectas facite semitas ejus.

Behold the Lamb of God. Who taketh away the sins of the world. I bear witness that this is the Son of God.

Can that be the Messiah that he points out? -- Yes, I am sure!

Numquid iste qui ostenditur est Christus? -- Immo vero mihi persuadeo.

If it is, I am sure I have seen him somewhere before today.

Ben-Hur recognizes the man pointed out as the young Nazarene who had offered him water as he was being led away the galleys. But as he leaps down the slope to join him, Iras calls for help.

It is Jesus, the son of the carpenter, from Nazareth.

Ηic est Jesus, fabri filius, a Nazareth.

My father has fallen! I beg you, come give me aid!

Pater cecidit! Οbsecro te, veniens adjuva me!

But while Ben-Hur ministered to the fallen Balthasar, the lonely figure of Jesus disappeared around the bend of the river Jordan.

Would that your father had not fainted at that moment or I could have talked to him who has been announced as our redeemer.

It seems strange to me that a king would select so shabby a creature as John the Baptist to be his herald.

We must wait and see. Your father says Jesus comes to be the savior of the world, but Simonides says he is to be our king.

Could not both be right? Why should not our redeemer also be our king?

Nonne uterque potest recte dicere? Cur non redemptor noster sit et rex?

Οὐχὶ ἑκάτερος ἔχει ὀρθῶς λέγειν; Πῶς οὐκ ἂν ὁ λυτρωτὴς ἡμῶν εἴη καὶ βασιλεύς;

He is not my idea of what a king should be. Only a girl as simple as your friend Esther would believe that this son of a carpenter will rule the world.

Ιste non mihi videtur rex esse. Una enim talis qualis amica tua Esther putet istum filium fabri toti dominaturum mundo.

Just looking in, and making a quick exit.
A wild looking, but striking figure draws the gaze of all eyes.

Oculi omnium in hominem vastum vultu at mirabilem finguntur.

He must be the man they call John the baptist. He is pointing at someone. Hear what he says.

Audite quid ait.
Hardly oculi finguntur. Something like Cuncti oculos vertunt would do. (Vergil memorably opens Aeneid bk.2 with conticuere omnes intentique ora tenebant.) Then e.g. in hominem incultum simul insignem.

And hardly τωμματα πηγνυται.

qui Baptistam vocatur a typo?

Many thanks, Michael!

A wild looking, but striking figure draws the gaze of all eyes.

Οculi omnium in hominem incultum simul insignem convertuntur.
