Inaugural Post — To Apollo

This board is a composition workshop, like a writers' workshop: post your work with questions about style or vocabulary, comment on other people's work, post composition challenges on some topic or form, or just dazzle us with your inventive use of galliambics.

Inaugural Post — To Apollo

Post by timippos »

Hi all,

Being new here, I'd like to share with you a short poem I recently composed on the occasion of a visit to Delphi (an amazing experience!) in the style of Horace and the Sapphic meter. I hope that you might consider this a suitable first post!

To Apollo

Multa per montis iuga vectus ad te,
Phoebe caelestis, neque patris expers
fulminum et densis subito ruentis
nubibus imbris

ante iam mirans adytum ac vetustam
intuens aram tumidum recordor
ore Pythonem celebrisque prolem
Deucalionis,

supplici olim cui properans Olympo
ferre venisse et rapidis dedisti
protinus leto rabidum sagittis
denique monstrum,

atque Parnasum prope nunc colentem
te precor gaudens: animum patronae
suscita Musae et mihi cinge lauro,
Delphice, crines.
