That same night some shepherds on a nearby hillside were startled from their sleep by a strange brightness in the sky.

Eadem nocte, in clivo propinquo, pastores quidam e somno excitati sunt mirantes cælestem candorem.

Τῇ αὐτῇ νυκτί, ἐπὶ λόφῳ πλήσιον ὄντι, ποιμένες τινὲς ἐξ ὕπνου ἠγέρθησαν θαυμάζοντες οὐρανίαν λευκότητα.

Awake! Awake! What is it? See! The sky is filled with light!

Surgite! Surgite! Quid hoc rei est? Videte. Cælum plenum lucis est.

Ἐγείρεσθε. Ἐγείρεσθε. Τί τοῦτό ἐστιν; Ἴδετε. Ὁ οὐρανὸς μεστὸς φωτός ἐστιν.

An angel of the Lord stood by them and the glory of God shone round about them and they feared exceedingly…

Et ecce angelus Domini stetit juxta illos, et claritas Dei circumfulsit illos, et timuerunt timore magno.

Kαὶ ἄγγελος Kυρίου ἐπέστη αὐτοῖς καὶ δόξα Kυρίου περιέλαμψεν αὐτούς, καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν φόβον μέγαν.

Be not afraid, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which shall be to all the people.

Nolite timere: ecce enim evangelizo vobis gaudium magnum, quod erit omni populo.

Mὴ φοβεῖσθε: ἰδοὺ γὰρ εὐαγγελίζομαι ὑμῖν χαρὰν μεγάλην ἥτις ἔσται παντὶ τῷ λαῷ.

For today in the town of David a savior is born to you who is Christ the Lord! And this shall be a sign to you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.

Quia natus est vobis hodie Salvator, qui est Christus Dominus, in civitate David. Et hoc vobis signum: invenietis infantem pannis involutum, et positum in præsepio.

Ὅτι ἐτέχθη ὑμῖν σήμερον σωτὴρ ὅς ἐστιν Χριστὸς Kύριος ἐν πόλει Δαυίδ. Καὶ τοῦτο ὑμῖν τὸ σημεῖον, εὑρήσετε βρέφος ἐσπαργανωμένον καὶ κείμενον ἐν φάτνῃ.

Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace among men of good will!

Gloria in excelsis Deo, et in terra pax hominibus bonæ voluntatis.

Δόξα ἐν ὑψίστοις Θεῷ καὶ ἐπὶ γῆς εἰρήνη ἐν ἀνθρώποις εὐδοκίας.
