Mirabilis: A Whole New World

This board is a composition workshop, like a writers' workshop: post your work with questions about style or vocabulary, comment on other people's work, post composition challenges on some topic or form, or just dazzle us with your inventive use of galliambics.

Mirabilis: A Whole New World

Post by Gregorius »

Here's my first (completed) Latin song translation. It's not a word-for-word translation, but rather a poetic paraphrase of the original English lyrics crafted to fit the music and rhyme scheme. I'd appreciate any feedback, especially on its poetic merit and how well I captured the meaning of the original lyrics. If you spot any grammatical errors, please do tell me so I can correct them pronto.

ALADINUS
Mondum splendidum hunc
Tibi possum mostr?re.
Parē, pulchra, cupīdit?tī
Cordis tuī erg?.

Possum auferre tē
Ad mīr?cula mondī.
In tapēte volantī
N?s vehimur magicē.

Mīr?bilis
Est mondus dē conspectū h?c.
Nam numquam vet?tur.
Nē dīc?tur
Id omne esse somnium.

IASMINA
Mīr?bile
Est locus hoc quod n?n n?vī.
Sed hīc clarissimē
Vide? mē
In mond? t?t? nov? esse nunc
ALADINUS: (In mond? t?t? nov? esse nunc)

Incrēdibile fit.
Pr?l?bor et subvol?.
Orbs stēll?rum omnīn?.
Descripti?nem ēlūdit.

Mīr?bilia,
ALADINUS: (Ocul?s aperī)
Videnda centum mīlia sunt.
ALADINUS: (S?lum fiet multum melius)
Cum caelī gemmīs hīs,
Procul vēnī.
Redīre numquam possum nec vol?.

ALADINUS
Mīr?bile
IASMINA: (Sēnsus arrigit mē)
Sīc ?ram mondī petimus
IASMINA: (Qu?que punct? mīrand?.)

AMBO
Stēll?s insect?b?
Qu?vīs loc?.
Inter n?s parti?mus e?s sīc.

ALADINUS: Mīr?bilis!
IASMINA: Mīr?bilis!
ALADINUS: Erimus hīc
IASMINA: Erimus hīc.
ALADINUS: Est līber?ns,
IASMINA: Est concit?ns
AMBO: Pr? tē mēque.
Here are the original lyrics for reference.

ALADDIN
I can show you the world,
Shining, shimmering, splendid.
Tell me, princess, now when did you last
Let your heart decide?

I can open your eyes,
Take you wonder by wonder,
Over, sideways, and under,
On a magic carpet ride.

A whole new world:
A new fantastic point of view!
No one to tell us “No?
Or where to go
Or say where only dreaming.

JASMINE
A whole new world:
A dazzling place I never knew!
But, now, from way up here
It’s crystal clear
That now I’m in a whole new world with you.
ALADDIN: (Now I’m in a whole new world with you.)

Unbelievable sights,
Indescribable feelings!
Soaring, tumbling, freewheeling
Through an endless diamond sky!

A whole new world:
ALADDIN: (Don’t you dare close your eyes.)
A hundred thousand things to see!
ALADDIN: (Hold your breath. It gets better!)
I’m like a shooting star.
I’ve come so far.
I can’t go back to where I used to be.

ALADDIN
A whole new world,
JASMINE: (Every turn a surprise)
With new horizons to pursue.
JASMINE: (Every moment red-letter)

BOTH
I’ll chase them anywhere
With time to spare.
Let me share this whole new world with you!

ALADDIN: A whole new world.
JASMINE: A whole new world.
ALADDIN: That’s where we’ll be.
JASMINE: That’s where we’ll be.
ALADDIN: A thrilling chase,
JASMINE: A wondrous place.
BOTH: For you and me.

I didn't catch this earlier (!). What a hilarious idea. I'll try to come back and read over this later. Maybe I'll be able to write a response then.

I'm glad you like the idea. I recently gave my Latin lyrics a once-over and decided that I may have taken more liberties with meaning than were necessary to retain melody and rhyme. Therefore, I have made a few revisions so that several parts of the Latin version are now much closer in meaning to the original English (and they still rhyme and fit the music)!

MIRABILIS
