Pharr-c went to one lesson per week as well.
For someone who has not had Greek before (and who has other things to do besides Greek) two lessons per week is a heavy load.
I wish you guys all the best.
I really enjoyed Pharr-a. I think Pharr-b made it to the end but I am not sure. Pharr-c went part ways, then started over again but the participation is really dropping.

Thanks for the advice, Bert. For Pharr-a, do you know how many people started and how many finished? I'm just curious.

I know that four people finished.
I am not sure but I think about twelve started.
Paul Bell's program is a great program but the way Pharr-a started was simply an email group. All the assignments were sent by email, not as nice as GTSS. However all the questions were asked by email as well.
This often initiated a discussion. This is not as likely to happen when the questions are asked and answered in GTSS.
If you can find a way to combine the best of both ways the interest of the participants is more likely going to survive.

What do I need to do to sign up for this group and would this be the right choice of Greek for me to study?
Thanks

You can read the following article:

http://www.aoidoi.org/articles/dialects.html

written by the famed William Annis. I would say yes, based upon his reasoning, but he talks about the pros and cons of your different options.

Thank you for the link and I would have to conclude from the information that Homeric would be my best choice. So how do I sign up for the group; do I just pop someone an e-mail or must I just say in this post that I'm interested in joining the group?

Thanks

Hi Pip,

You could send Paul an email directly (see above) or email Socrates (see below)

Hello everybody,

I was interested in the starting date and schedule we would be following. Socrates, if you have no time to further organize this, could you please inform us? If your too busy (always possible), I would like to take over. It seems a waste to let this group wither before it starts.

My idea: I have time on saturdays to correct lessons. If you all prefer to do 2 lessons a week, then I could also throw in the tuesdays.

The question is: how fast do you all want to go?

I think 2 per week would be ok for the first 10 - 15 lessons, but then I think we should go to 1/week.

Pharr-a, which sounds like it was fairly successful, may be a good model:

Yep, I was in Pharr-a. We did 2 lessons a week, and after the lessons were done, if memory serves me well, we did one large chunk of the Iliad a week.

Took us 1,5 years in all.

-edit- How soon I forget: I was in Pharr-b.

I'm all for doing 2 lessons per week for a while, then going down to one per week when things get hairy. When can we start?

Well, how about Tuesdays and Fridays for due dates? Since everyone seemed eager to start right away, and since tradition has it that the first day is for introductions, I would propose (based upon pharr-a's schedule ) the following to get us started:

"But you should start on learning the alphabet (lessons one and two) now."

Jan 05 (Fri) - Introductions
Jan 09 (Tues) - Lesson III
Jan 12 (Fri) - Lesson IV
Jan 16 (Tues) - Lesson V
Jan 19 (Fri) - Lesson VI
Jan 22 (Tues) - Lesson VII
Jan 26 (Fri) - Lesson VIII
Jan 29 (Tues) - REVIEW/Questions
Feb 02 (Fri) - Lesson IX / Groundhog Celebration

...

Thoughts?

For the introductions there would have to be a mailinglist. I haven't seen mention of the creation of such a list yet.

Also, as I would be able to do corrections on Saturday/Tuesday, lessons would preferably have to be entered before Saturday/Tuesday.

I'm assuming from the past schedules that the date of a lesson is the date the exercises are due (i.e., they should be entered into GTSS on or before that date). If that is so, then we could use the schedule I proposed, but change the Tuesdays to Mondays. Would that work?

Annis had mentioned starting a pharr-d mailing list and web page. I'm sure that offer to us is still open if we ask nicely enough.

annis wrote:If someone can keep me apprised of the schedule I can keep a group web page up with that. Simply following pharr-a might be a bit too inflexible.

For non-GTSS communication (announcements, longer discussion not about a particular exercise), a mailing list is helpful. pharr-d, then?
William, since we are about to begin (see the last post for a proposed schedule), it would be great to have a pharr-d mailing list.

Hi All,

GTSS infrastructure is in place. All that remains for me is to e-mail all participants their userids/passwords.

If you've looked at the GTSS docs, then you know what a 'lesson ID' is. Please note that Pharr study groups use his paragraph numbers as lessonIDs. Thus the first lessonID that requires you to submit your work is number 11.

But all this is a bit overwrought. Simply use the GTSS 'Files' tab and 'discover by author' to see the complete list of lessons. Click on a number in this list to open the corresponding exercise.

Cordially,

Paul

εὖ. (my best approximation of "ok").

To join the mailing list visit this web page: Pharr-D. It will ask you for your email address and your name, as well ask you to create a password. When you click the "subscribe" button you'll get email at the address you entered asking you to confirm your subscription. Within a day of that you'll get email with a final confirmation your membership in the list.

It is very important that you follow the instructions for confirming your wish to join the list. If you don't do that, I'll never know you tried to join (well, not automatically). Almost always the initial confirmation will arrive in your mailbox within minutes of you clicking "subscribe" on the web page. Some spam filters may regard the confirmation mail as spam, so check your spam folders if you don't get anything for more than, say, an hour.

Please e-mail me so that I can send your GTSS userid and password. Construct my address from the domain name optonline.net and the name "greekgeek."

Search this thread for references to the PDF files that discuss how to use GTSS.

Hello All,

I just got back from holiday travel where I didn't have internet access. I just used my password at the GTSS site and registered for the email list. I'm still alittle confused about what days the lessons will be due. Also, are we able to do lessons ahead of time? Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help! Thanks,

Socrates

The 5th of January we will start with introducing ourselves via the email list.

Ofcourse you can work ahead, it is just important that you know that I myself will stick to the schedule when it comes to correcting. I will do corrections on Saturdays and Tuesdays, so everyone sticking to the schedule would have to post before those days.

Hi Adelheid,

There are now 14 members of pharr-d, not counting you. I suggest that you close the group.

History teaches that you will see at least 30% attrition.

Are you the only guide?

14 members will be quite enough for just the one guide, so yes, time to close the group.

So the Pharr-d group is now officially closed.
