I'm having a bit of trouble with this line.<br />[face=SPIonic]o( qeo\j e)fiei\j e)xepeuke/a be/lea au)toi=sin [/face]( [face=SPIonic])Axaioi=sin[/face]) [face=SPIonic]e)/ballen[/face]<br />Without [face=SPIonic]e)fiei\j[/face] this sentence would mean; The god was shooting sharp arrows at them (the Achaeans).<br />I am not sure what to do with [face=SPIonic]e)fiei\j[/face]. The vocabulary section of the book says that it is a participle. It would have to be an aorist passive ( what happened to the theta?) The glosses given for [face=SPIonic]e)fi/hmi[/face] are -shoot against, hurl upon, send upon. If I am correct in saying that it is a passive participle, can this mean -was sent upon-(was sent for)?<br />Then this line would mean something like; The god who was sent for, i.e: Apollo, was shooting sharp arrows at them.<br />Am I close?<br />Thanks<br />Bert.

Check out section 956. The present participles of [face=SPIonic]i(/hmi[/face] are [face=SPIonic]i(ei/j, i(ei=sa, i(e/n[/face].<br /><br />So, no passive, just Epic fullness of expression using two verbs for hurling/throwing, one a participle, one a finite form.<br />
