I don't understand how the translations (on Perseus) I checked come up with; 'listen to the word of others who are better than you.'
I came up with; 'listen to the word of others, they are better than you.'
In order for it to mean listen to those who are better than you [face=SPIonic]oi(\ fe/rteroi [/face]would have to be in the dative. (or accusative -> obey others etc.)

I think your translation is right. The 'relative' clause is added as a reason why the soldier should listen: "because they are better than you".

Of course. It makes good sense now. I did not view oi(/ as a relative pronoun but simply as 'they'
(I knew I could count on you.)
