Procopius?

Post by kechristensen »

Hello. I'm new to the site and I would like to learn Greek.

I loved Procopius in translation, and would like to read his works in Greek. I'm a bit confused, though, and hope you can help - he was writing in Byzantium, but I read that he was emulating Thucydides.

Where should I start with Greek, then?

Thank you!

I'd go for classic (Attic) Greek myself. I find Procopius' work a slightly easier version of that form of Greek and maybe Koine (Biblical) Greek would serve you well too but Attic will make everything Byzantine accessible and easy.
No need for Homeric Greek in my opinion although I can see some people here ready to argue against that :D

P.S. His work (though astoundingly biased in his "Secret History") is quite interesting and makes an engrossing read.
