may ὄπισθεν be divided into two parts? ὄπ and ισθεν the op meaning follow and isde(n) meang be litterally to be following?

Well it can be divided but it's the -θεν (-then) part that is the second compound, deriving from the long lost (to the Greek at least :D ) ablative and denotes movement from, or if you which "the" whence (a bit "old-fashioned" but I like it :) )
