ἄλλοι ἄλλῃ ἀπῆλθον

Post by Gonzalo »

Hello,
I have a doubt on paragraph 22nd of Sigdwick´s First Greek Writer:
ἄλλοι ἄλλῃ ἀπῆλθον (One went one way and another another)

I can understand perfectly the sense of the example but I am not able to do its syntactic analysis. I think it´s very simple but I dont´s see it clearly.
Could anyone help me?

Thanks in advance.

It's a Greek idiom: when you have two different forms of ἄλλος in a sentence, each one is translated twice (I believe there's something similar in Latin). Another translation might be "different people went different ways".

ἄλλῃ (supply ?δῷ) is the dative feminine of the adjective being used to describe location.
IPHIGENIE: Kann uns zum Vaterland die Fremde werden?
ARKAS: Und dir ist fremd das Vaterland geworden.
IPHIGENIE: Das ist's, warum mein blutend Herz nicht heilt.
(Goethe, Iphigenie auf Tauris)
