Page 90 Ex 5.16

The general, arranging the army heard a shout.

2) οἱ δοῦλοι οἱ φεύγοντες εἰς τὸν ποταμὸν εἰσέπεσον.
The fleeing slaves, were falling into the river.

3) ἐλάβομεν τὸν λέοντα τὸν τοὺς ἀνθρώπους ἐσθίοντα.
We took the lion who was eating the men.

4) ὁ ξένος ὁ τὸν ἲππον ἒχων ἒφυγεν.
The stranger, having the horse fled.

5) κελεύσω τὸν δοῦλον τὸν λέγοντα ἀποβαίνειν.
I will order the talking slave to go away.

6) οἱ στρατιῶται τὴν κώμην φυλάσσοντες ἀπέθανον.
The soldiers died guarding the village.


7) τίνες εἰσὶν οἱ ναῦται οἱ τὸν λιμένα λείποντες;
Who are the sailors who are leaving the harbour?

8) πιστεύω τῷ κριτῇ τῷ σοφῶς λέγοντι.
I trust the judge who speaks wisely

9) ἐγὼ ηὖρον ἂνθρωπόν τινα τὸ ἐμὸν δεῖπνον ἐσθίοντα.
I found a man eating my dinner.

10) Ὁ νεανίας ὁ τὴν χώραν γιγνώσκων χρήσιμός σοί ἐστιν.
The young man who knows the country is useful for you.




Page 90 Ex 5.17, English to Greek

1) The soldiers who are escaping are not wise.
Οἱ στρατιῶται οἱ ἐκφευγοντες οὐ σοφοι εἰσιν.

2) While chasing the giant, the young man fell.
Ὁ νεονίας τον γιγαντα, διωκων ἒπεσεν.

3) The teacher, while he was writing a letter, heard the shouts.
Ὁ διδασκαλος ἐπιστολην γραφων, τας βοας ἦκουσεν.

4) The lion died when it was eating the boy.
Ὁ λεων πέθανε ἐσθιων τὸν παῖδα.

5) Who is the slave who is driving the horses?
Τίς ὁ δοῦλος ὁ τους ἱππους ἐλαυνων;




Page 91 Ex 5.18, Greek to English

1) διὰ τί οἱ ναῦται ἀνδρεῖοι ὂντες ἒφυγον;
Why did the sailors, being brave, flee?

2) Ὁ διδἀσκαλος σοφὸς ὢν σοφῶς διδάσκει.
The teacher, being wise, teaches wisely.

3) οἱ ξένοι σύμμαχοι ὂντες ἐφύλασσον τὸν λιμένα.
The strangers, being allies, were guarding the harbour.

4) Ὁ Ζεὺς θεὸς ὢν καλὰ δῶρα παρέχει.
Zeus, being a God, provides beautiful gifts.

5) οἱ πολῖται οἱ ἐν τῇ ἀγορᾷ παρόντες ἐθαυμασαν.
The citizens, who were present in the market, admired.



Page 91 Ex 5.19, English to Greek
1) The ruler, because he was wise, wrote good laws.
Ὁ ἀρχων, σοφος ὢν, καλους νομους ἐγραψεν


2) The soldiers, being brave, guarded the citizens.
Οἱ στρατιῶται, ὂντες ἀνδρεῖοι, τους πολιτας ἐφυλαξαν.


3) The boys, because they were bad, did not listen.
Οἱ παῖδες, διοτι κακοι ἦσαν, οὐκ ἦκουσαν.


4) Polyphemus, who was a giant, ate two men.
Ὁ Πολύφημος ὁ γίγας ἦν, δύο ἀνθρώπους ἐφαγεν.


5) Because it was dangerous, the river hindered the army.
διοτι χαλεπος ἦν, ὁ ποταμος ἐκωλυσε τον στρατόν.





Page 97 Ex 6.1, Greek to English



1) ἡ κόρη ἐπιστολὴν γράφουσα οὐκ ἢκουσε τὴν βοήν.
The girl, writing the letter did not hear the shout.

2) ἐγὼ τὸ τῆς κώμης ὂνομα χαλεπὸν ὂν οὐκ ἒμαθον.
I did not learn the name of the village, being dangerous.

3) αἱ παῖδες αἱ τὴν ἐμὴν οἰκίαν φυλάσσουσαι ἀνδρεῖαι ἦσαν.
The female children, who are guarding my house, were brave.

4) θαυμάζομεν τὸ ἱερὸν ὡς καλὸν ὂν.
We admire the temple because being good.

5) τὸ ζῷον τὸ τὸν δοῦλον διώκον μέγιστόν ἐστιν.
The animal who chased the slave is big.

6) ἡ Ἀφροδίτη θεὰ οὖσα δῶρα τοῖς ἀνθρώποις παρέχει.
Aphrodite, being a goddess, provides gifts to the men.

7) αἱ τοῦ διδασκάλου βίβλοι χρήσιμαι οὖσαι ἡμᾶς διδάσκουσιν.
The books of the teacher, being useful teach us.

8) ἆρα πιστεύεις τῇ Μούσῃ τῇ τοὺς ποιητὰς διδασκούσῃ;
Is it that you believe the Muse, who teaches the poets?

9) ἐλάβομεν τὴν χώραν ὡς χρησίμην οὖσαν.
We took the country because it is useful.

10) ἆρα εἰσεδράμετε εἰς τὸ ἱερὸν τὸ τὴν μεγίστην θύραν ἒχον;
Is it that you ran into the temple which was having the very large door?

You should fix the accents everywhere, since they are 90% wrong.

μικρα θυρα what case should you use with ἔχει?
τον σέ ἱππον besides the wrong accent, what's the difference between σύ and σός, ή, όν?
In 5 σύ is not really called for. What case does πιστεύω require?
