Greek conversation

Postby jeidsath » Mon Dec 30, 2013 3:59 pm

Are there good resources for "conversational" Greek phrases? I have interlinears of Xenophon, Homer, and the NT, and have been using these to increase my reading ability (ie., I learn a page or two a day, getting to the point where I can read it easily without the interlinear). But I feel limited in basic communication ability.

I'd like to add another text to my reading program, preferably something very conversation-heavy. I would probably use Perseus + a translation to crib together some sort of interlinear, and then go back and learn it as a second pass. Suggestions for a text, anyone?

There are other Blackie books that contain dialogue, such as
Blackie, J. Stuart. “Greek Primer Colloquial and Constructive.” 1891. http://archive.org/stream/greekprimercollo00blacrich (accessed Jan 10, 2014).

Are looking to learn Greek as a living language?
Randall Buth's books would help, but you'll have to learn a new pronunciation scheme.

Here's a list I had been trying to compile of phrases:

And don't forget Christophe Rico's Polis. You'll have to purchase a non-English version but that isn't a great loss as he tries to stay in Greek most of the time.
You can also see his teaching methods on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJrGaOF-bOw

Thanks! These are all amazing resources. I have begun working on integrating the Blackie with my current reading. I think that I will begin by making audio recordings of some of his dialogues and listening to them for understanding.

I'd be interested in hearing the recording, if you are willing to share them. If I have some time, I might make some of Blackie myself. If I do, I'll share them somehow. But I use Restored Koine pronunciation, so you might not like them.
