Perihelion -- perelion?

Post by Lucus Eques »

Χαί?ετε!

I've been wondering a lot about certain English words from Greek, and whether or not they were badly constructed. For instance, "perihelion" —I find it very odd that there should be an 'h' in the middle of the word. Would not "perelion" be more Greek? And as for "aphelion"?

Another one that comes up in palœomagnetic geology is "anhysteretic," but surely "anysteretic," that is ανυστε?ετικόν, would be much better, no?

I'd just also like to mention briefly: there've been times where I've posted questions here and you all have given me great answers but I haven't responded. I apologize for that; constraints on time have ruined my manners. I wanted to thank you all for the generosity of your time and your wisdom in these many matters.
