Is the technique of accentuation so vital for beginners and the basis of ancient greek learning?

I wouldn't say you have to master all the rules of accentuation right away, but it is something you should attend to. Once you've seen more Greek — and composed it! — it start to make a lot more sense. Accenting does matter when reading wild (i.e., not textbook) Greek.
