ἄλλο τι

Post by Laertiades »

I am unable to determine the grammatical function of ἄλλο τι in the following from Euthyphro 10 D:

τί δὴ οὖν λέγομεν περὶ τοῦ ὁσίου, ὦ Εὐθύφρων; ἄλλο τι φιλεῖται ὑπὸ θεῶν πάντων, ὡς ὁ σὸς λόγος;

it seems to mean "is it something other than...?" Is some comparative like ὴ implied? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Smyth actually cites this reference in his treatment of the direct interrogative
ἅλλο τι ἢ, is it anything else than ? and ἄλλο τι, is it not ?.

Smyth §2652

It seems from Smyth's treatment, that the former expects a positive answer, that is,
there's really no alternative, whereas the latter is genuine question, neither expecting a positive
answer, nor denying the existence of an alternative.

At least that's how it seems to me. I would love to hear others' thoughts though.
Nate.
