To say Happy Birthday in greek

Post by mingshey »

Woodhouse entry for birthday:
Birthday, used as adj. P. and V. γενέθλιος. Birthday offerings to the gods : P. and V. γενέθλια, τά. Hold birthday sacrifice : P. and V. γενέθλια θύειν.
Seems that their birthday was a day for sacrifice. :? Now, what did greeks say in their friends' birthday to celebrate it? What was their equivalent to "Happy birthday!"?

I don't know what they did in ancient Greece, but if it helps, this is a birthday greeting in modern Greek:

na zeseis (name of person) kai chronia polla
megalos na gineis
me aspra pallia
pantou na skorpizeis tes gnwseis to fws
kai oloi na lene
NA ENAS SOFOS!
