translation help needed

Postby maninblk » Fri Apr 01, 2011 6:25 pm

I am reviewing my Greek using the book I used in college: An Introduction to Greek by Crosby and Schaeffer. I am not sure how to translate this one. I know its a genitive of value, but I am not sure how to translate it into English. Thanks

ο ανθρωπος αζιος ην δωρον καλων

"The man is worthy of good gifts," I'd imagine.

Are you sure it's not δωρων? That doesn't look right.

Agreed. It has to be gen. pl. δώρων.

ἦν means "was" rather than "is".

And αζιος* should be ἄξιος.
Ex mala malo
bono malo uesci
quam ex bona malo
malo malo malo.

Much better.

ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἄξιος ἦν δώρων καλῶν.

Now it's a nice sentence. :)

"The man was worthy of lovely/good/goodly gifts."
