Pl. Ap. 23a7-8

Post by NateD26 »

καὶ φαίνεται τοῦτον λέγειν τὸν Σωκράτη, προσκεχρῆσθαι δὲ
τῷ ἐμῷ ὀνόματι, ἐμὲ παράδειγμα ποιούμενος,

Most translations read τοῦτου instead of τοῦτον as some contraction of τοῦτ᾿ οὐ.
Plato's Apology and Crito, with Notes p.120
This makes sense as the sentence does have an apparent contrast,
so I was wondering how others have read it.
Nate.

That makes a lot of sense, especially since προσκεχρῆσθαι is an infinitive. If it were indicative, it could be a contrast like "it seems like it is..., but it is [really] using..." which is how I read it, but correcting it to τοῦτ' οὐ does makes sense of the grammar.
