TABULA TERTIA ET VICESIMΑ

On letters. De epistolis.

To fold a letter. Epistolam complicare.

To seal a letter. Litteras (signo) obsignare. Epistolam sigillo munire.

To open a letter, to break the seal. Epistolam resignare (resolvere, explicare).

To address a letter. Epistolam inscribere.

To send a letter to somebody. Litteras ad aliquem scribere (mittere, dare).

To give somebody a letter for another person. Alicui litteras committere.

He has sent my letter back to me without having opened it. Litteras signo integro mihi reddidit.

I received your very little letter. Accepi perbreves tuas litteras.

I don’t receive new letters from you anymore. Conquiescunt litterae tuae.

Why don’t you write me anymore? Cur conticescunt litterae tuae? Διὰ τί κατασιωπῶσι τά γράμματα σου;

I have been expecting your letter for long time. Litteras tuas jamdudum desidero.

Francis was expecting your letter. Tuas jam litteras Franciscus exspectabat.

Write me as many letters as you can. Ad me quam saepissime scribas.

I had nothing to write to you at all. Plane nihil erat quod ad te scriberem.

I had nothing to say. Nihil habebam quod dicerem.

From Rome, no news at all. E Roma ne hilum quidem.

I will often write to you, and you, write often to me too.

I will not write (at length) anymore; my letters will be shorter. Litterae meae conquiescent; longiore epistola supersedebo.

I will write more when I have more time.

I liked your letter very much. Gratae mihi tuae litterae fuerunt.

Thank you for the letters you have sent to me; they pleased me quite a lot, above all that one from our (friend) Francis. Gratum quod mihi dedisti epistolas, quae quidem me delectarunt, in primis Francisci nostri.

Please keep me well and quickly informed about what you are doing and what you are thinking of doing.
