TABULA UNA ET VICESIMA
ΠΙΝΑΞ ΠΡΩΤΟΣ ΚΑΙ ΕΙΚΟΣΤΟΣ

Translating, writing a composition. Interpretari, scriptioni animum adhibere. Μεταφράζειν, θέματι τὸν νοῦν προσέχειν.

To translate into Latin. Latine reddere (interpretari). In latinum sermonem transferre (vertere, convertere). Ῥωμαϊστὶ ἐκφέρειν. Εἰς τὴν Ῥωμαίων φωνὴν μεταφράζειν (μεθερμηνεύειν).

To translate word for word. Verbum verbo exprimere. Reddere verbum pro verbo. Κατὰ λέξιν ἀποδιδόναι. Ἑρμηνεύειν (μεθερμηνεύειν) κατὰ λέξιν.

To translate (from) Greek word for word, literally. Ad verbum de graecis litteris exprimere. Κατὰ λέξιν τὴν Ἑλλήνων γλῶτταν μεθερμηνεύειν.

To polish up a composition. Opus elaborare (perpolire, perficere). Θέμα πονεῖν (ἐκπονεῖν, φιλοπονεῖν, ἐξεργάζεσθαι).

I have worked hard in this composition. In eo vehementer desudavi. Σφόδρα ἐπιπεπόνηκα τούτῳ.

We will write in prose, in verse. Soluta oratione scribemus, stricta oratione. Πεζῷ λόγῳ γράψομεν, ἐμμέτρῳ λόγῳ.

Apply yourself to your writing. Converte (adhibe) animum ad scriptionem. Πρόσεχε τὸν νοῦν εἰς τὸ σὸν θέμα.

To write one’s composition carefully. Scriptionem accurate elaborare (polire, limare). Τὴν συγγραφὴν φροντίζειν (ἐξεργάζεσθαι, διακριβοῦν).

I write compositions every day. A scriptione nullus mihi dies vacuus est. Καθ’ ἡμέραν θέμα γράφω (ποιῶ).

You have not finished polishing up your composition. Ultima lima defuit scriptioni tuae. Τὴν σὴν συγγραφὴν οὐκ ἀκριβῶς ἐπανώρθωκας.

To review something and correct it carefully. Aliquid summa cura et diligenter recognoscere. Ἀκριβῶς τι καὶ ἐπιμελῶς διορθοῦν.

This (pupil) excels at writing speeches, that one excels at composing verses. Hic oratoria facultate, ille praestat poetica. Οὖτος μὲν περὶ τοὺς λόγους, ἐκεῖνος δὲ περὶ τὴν ποίησιν προέχει.

You have made the same mistake as he did. Idem peccasti ac ille. Ταὐτὰ αὐτῷ ἥμαρτες.

How much time have you spent in writing? Quantum temporis scriptioni tribuisti? Πόσον χρόνον διέτριψας ἐν τῷ θέμα συγγράφειν;

To win prizes. Praemia consequi. Τῶν γερῶν τυγχάνειν.

He understands Greek very well. Luculente (luculenter) graece novit. Τῆς ἑλληνικῆς γλώττης ἐμπείρως ἔχει.

He doesn’t know how to speak Latin. Latine nescit. Τῆς ῥωμαϊκῆς γλώττης οὐκ ἐπίσταται.

He misunderstood the sense of this part (of the text). He misinterpreted this passage. Hanc sententiam male interpretatus est. Ταύτην τὴν διάνοιαν παρεξηγήσατο.

He committed a contradiction in this passage. This part of his translation is inconsistent. Hunc locum in contrarium sensum detorsit. Τὸν νοῦν τούτου τοῦ χωρίου τοὐναντίον ἐξεδέξατο.
Hominibus totam versandam constat esse bibliothecam, ut solam utilem scribere sententiam possint.
