ΠΙΝΑΞ Ο ΕΝΑΤΟΣ ΚΑΙ ΔΕΚΑΤΟΣ

Explaining, making a difficulty clear. Explanare, difficultatem aperire. Ἐξηγεῖσθαι, δυσκολίαν διασαφηνίζειν.

What does that word mean? Quid valet (sonat) illa vox? Τί σημαίνει ἐκεῖνο τὸ ῥῆμα;

What is the meaning of this word? What does this word stand for? Quaenam est hujus vocabuli notio? Quae notio subjecta est huic voci? Quid hoc verbi est? Τί δύναται τοῦτο τὸ ῥῆμα; Τίς ἐστι ταύτης τῆς φωνῆς ὑπόσχεσις;

Let’s examine this word and explain it. Explicemus illud verbum et excutiamus. Ἐξετάζωμεν ταύτην τὴν λέξιν καὶ διηγώμεθα.

This word is unusual. Verbum hoc est insolens (inusitatum). Tritum non est hoc vocabulum. Τοῦτο τὸ ῥῆμα ἄχρηστόν ἐστι. Αὕτη ἡ λέξις ἐστὶν ἀήθης.

This word no longer means what it used to. Recessit hoc verbum a veteri sua significatione. Ἀφέστατο τοῦτο τὸ ῤῆμα τῆς προτέρας σημασίας.

This word have several meanings. Huic verbo multiplex subjecta est significatio. Αὕτη ἡ λέξις ποικίλα σημαίνει.

This word can convey two senses. Verbum hoc in duas sententias accipi potest. Τοῦτο τὸ ῥῆμα νοῦν ἔχει διπλοῦν.

These two words mean the same, have the same meaning. Haec duo verba unum sonant. Haec duo verba eamdem habent sententiam (notionem). Ταῦτα δύο ῥήματα συνώνυμά ἐστι.

What does this passage mean? Quaenam est hujus loci sententia? Τοῦτο τὸ χωρίον νοῦν ἔχει τίνα;

I don’t understand very well the meaning of this word. Parum intelligo (minus capio, non satis novi) quid haec vox sonet. Ἧττον καταλαμβάνω τί σημαίνει τοῦτο τὸ ῥῆμα.

I don’t understand very well this passage of Cicero. Parum intellego (minus accipio) locum hunc a Cicerone. Ὀλίγον (παραμικρὸν) συνοῶ τοῦτο τοῦ Κικέρωνος χωρίον.

Do you understand what I’m saying? Tenes quid dicam? Τὸν ἐμὸν λόγον συνίης;

Have you undestood, or haven’t you yet? —Yes, absolutely. Hoc intellextin? an nondum etiam? —Imo callide. Τοῦτο συνεῖκας; μηδέπω συνίης; —Ἀλλά γε δή.

I don’t quite understand what you mean. Nondum tuam cogitationem assecutus sum (percepi). Οὔπω τήν διάνοιαν σου κατέλαβον.

I’ll make he understand this difficulty. Illum ad intellegentiam hujus difficultatis adducam. Ἐνσημανοῦμαι αὐτῷ ταύτην τὴν δυσκολίαν.

He can’t see anything clear in this. Nihil in eo videt. Περί τούτου τυφλώττει.

To make a difficulty clear. Aperire difficultatem. Διασαφηνίζειν δυσκολίαν.

To explain something to the children. Aliquid pueris praelegere (exponere, explanare, interpretari). Παισί τι ἐξηγεῖσθαι (διασαφηνίζειν, ἑρμηνεύειν).

To explain a passage of Cicero. Locum Ciceronis explanare (aperire, illustrare). Χωρίον τοῦ Κικέρωνος διηγεῖσθαι (σαφηνίζειν).

To explain word for word. Totidem verbis interpretari. Μεθερμηνεύειν κατὰ λέξιν.

To explain further. Diffusius (enodatius) explicare. Dicere latius. Plenius exprimere. Uberius explanare. Παραφράζειν τι. Σαφέστερον δηλοῦν. Τῷ λόγῳ διεξέρχεσθαι (ἀποδεικνύναι).
Hominibus totam versandam constat esse bibliothecam, ut solam utilem scribere sententiam possint.
