Critical Apparatus

Would anyone be so kind as to briefly explain how an apparatus criticus works? I understand the basic principle that alternative readings are recorded at the bottom of the page, but I am at a loss as to what '' signify, let alone abbreviations like 'ath.'.

Anyway, I consider myself a student of language, but other than a terrible first-year Latin class, a year of French and two years of Spanish, I don't have much formal training. So I find myself needing clarification on some of the stuff ...

and my translation:

The farmer praises both the life and the fortune of the sailor; the sailor often praises the ...

Anyone know of Greek Grammar Guides?

I am not sure if anyone knows of those laminated grammar guides for Spanish, French, and German, and other popular subjects - does anyone know if they have one for Ancient Greek? I have even found them for Latin, but not Ancient Greek.

Has anyone made their own small, compact grammar guide on Word or Word Perfect and might be willing to share? Thanks a bunch.
